The Significance

Salat al-Janazah is a unique prayer performed in congregation to seek pardon for the deceased and to console the bereaved. Unlike the five daily prayers, it contains no Ruku (bowing) or Sujud (prostration). It is performed standing as a mark of respect and focused supplication.
"Whoever attends the funeral until the prayer is offered will have one Qirat (of reward), and whoever attends until the burial takes place will have two Qirats." It was asked: "What are two Qirats?" He said: "Like two huge mountains."
— Sahih Bukhari & MuslimThe Four Takbirs
The First Takbir & Al-Fatihah
After the initial 'Allahu Akbar', place your hands on your chest and recite Surah Al-Fatihah silently.
"In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds..."
The Second Takbir & Salawat
Upon the second 'Allahu Akbar', recite the Ibrahimic Prayer (Salawat) as done in the daily Tashahhud.
"O Allah, let Your Peace come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad..."
The Third Takbir & Dua for Deceased
This is the core of the prayer. After the third 'Allahu Akbar', offer sincere supplication for the soul of the departed.
"O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him and give him strength and pardon him..."
The Fourth Takbir & Tasleem
After the final 'Allahu Akbar', one may make a brief Dua for the entire Ummah, followed by the Tasleem to the right.
"Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah"
